The Preamble of the Constitution


Read the Preamble below. Use the video to help understand what each phrase in the Preamble means. Write the meaning of each phrase on the line below.


We the People of the United States,


in Order to form a more perfect Union,


establish Justice,


insure domestic Tranquility,


provide for the common defense,


promote the general Welfare,


and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity,



do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.





The first three words of the Constitution are "We the People..."
Not only are they the first words, they are the LARGEST.


1.  What were the authors of the Constitution trying to tell the world about their new government by making these the first three words?
